Preflight

Preflight is the quality-control step where digital files are inspected for technical errors prior to output. This preflight print check ensures that elements like image resolution, colour mode, and font embedding meet the specific requirements of the production workflow. The process identifies issues that would otherwise cause job failures, such as low-resolution images or missing fonts, allowing designers to correct them before the file enters the print queue.

Effective preflighting relies on automated scripts or software that scan the document against a set of predefined rules. These rules often reference industry standards for colour management and file structure. By catching errors early, preflighting reduces the risk of physical defects, such as blurry text or incorrect colour reproduction, and prevents unnecessary reprints. It serves as the primary gate between design and production, ensuring the final output matches the intended digital proof.
