Imposition
Imposition is the pre-press technique of arranging multiple page images onto a single large press sheet. In commercial printing, this ensures that when the sheet is printed, folded, and trimmed, the final pages appear in the correct sequence and orientation. For business cards, imposition typically involves placing multiple card designs on a larger sheet of stock to reduce material waste and lower the cost per unit.
The process accounts for physical constraints such as paper grain direction, binding margins, and the specific capabilities of the printing press. Proper imposition requires calculating the exact number of cards that fit within the printable area of the sheet, including necessary bleed areas. It is a critical step that bridges design and production, ensuring that the digital file translates efficiently into physical printed matter without requiring manual re-arrangement on the shop floor.
