Pantone Matching System (PMS)

Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a standardized color reproduction system used in the printing industry. Unlike CMYK, which creates colors by mixing four process inks, PMS uses pre-mixed spot inks. This allows for precise matching of specific hues, including metallics, fluorescents, and deep tones that standard process inks often fail to achieve.

When a designer requests a specific Pantone number, the printer mixes a dedicated ink to match that reference. This ensures consistency across different jobs and substrates. While CMYK is suitable for full-color images, PMS is essential when brand identity requires exact color fidelity. Understanding the difference between spot and process color is critical for accurate print production.
