What is GSM in paper?

GSM stands for grams per square metre — the standard metric for paper grammage, the mass of a one-metre-by-one-metre sheet (ISO 536). Because it is measured per unit area, it means the same thing at any sheet size. It does not measure thickness directly — the same GSM can be thicker or thinner depending on the stock’s density — but it is the most reliable way to compare how heavy two papers are. You will frequently see this figure in print specifications because it directly correlates to the physical weight and rigidity of the final product. For example, a 300 GSM cardstock feels significantly stiffer and more premium than a 120 GSM sheet. When selecting materials for your business cards, understanding this metric helps you predict how the item will feel in a client’s hand.
