Methodology
How we source, check, measure and cite everything on PrintRuler — so you can judge and reuse it.
Reference & statistics pages
- We state facts plainly and cite the source (standards bodies, trade references, named research houses, government statistics).
- We write in our own words and do not republish other sites' text or images.
- Where sources disagree (for example, market-size figures from different research houses), we show both rather than average them, and say why.
- We distinguish measured surveys from industry norms and vendor estimates, and label them as such.
- We flag figures with no primary source rather than repeat them (e.g. the "88% of cards thrown away" claim — see our business card statistics).
- Errors are corrected promptly, every page carries an updated date, and substantive corrections are listed in the corrections log below.
Measurements
- Where a physical figure matters (thickness, weight, size), we prefer direct measurement of production stock over conversion or inference.
- Thickness is taken with a digital caliper, multiple readings per grade. We publish the range, not a single value — production batch, grain direction, coating and humidity all move the reading.
- Our measured figures are published in full — with the method and a "cite this" block — at card stock measurements.
Tools
- Every tool runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.
- Formulas are standard and shown in the tool's notes (e.g. the lb↔gsm conversion factors; 1.5 mm bleed default — 2 mm on some presses; 3–5 mm only for bound booklets).
- Tools are guidance, not a substitute for a printer's spec or a physical proof.
Corrections
Substantive corrections, newest first — what was wrong, and what it is now.
- 2026-10-13 — card thickness figures. Replaced inferred mill-spec values with direct caliper measurements of production art card (250/310/360/400 gsm = 0.30–0.33 / 0.38–0.40 / 0.44–0.47 / 0.54–0.57 mm). The earlier figures assumed a denser stock than the measured one. See the measured data.
- 2026-10-13 — the "point" (pt). One page defined 1 pt as 1/100 inch (0.254 mm). A paper-trade point is 1/1000 inch = 0.0254 mm. Also clarified that pt (thickness) and gsm (weight) do not convert 1:1 — thickness depends on the stock's density.
- 2026-10-13 — lb→gsm conversion factors. The bond factor was wrong (1.4173; correct 3.7597) and cover was slightly off (2.7078 → 2.7041), affecting the paper-weight converter. The reference tables now show the multiply direction (lb × factor = gsm).
- 2026-10-13 — minor numeric fixes. 53.98 mm shown as 2.12 in (now 2.13 in); "100 lb cover ≈ 300 gsm" (now 270 gsm).
Original survey data
Our planned Business Card & Print Usage Survey will follow these rules when published:
- Sample size: a minimum of 300 responses (target 500+) so whole-sample percentages carry a stated margin of error; a Malaysian subgroup of at least 250 for local claims.
- Neutral wording: questions avoid leading framing; balanced scales; "none / don't receive" options always available.
- Transparency: we will publish the question set, field dates, distribution channels, sample size and subgroup margins of error — and state the self-selection limitation plainly.
- Reuse: anonymised aggregates and charts will be published under a permissive licence with a "cite this" block.
Independence
PrintRuler is operated by the team behind businesscard.my, a business-card printer. That relationship is disclosed here and on our About page. It does not change our sourcing or our measurements: we cite sources, publish our method, avoid brand promotion, and link to the store only where genuinely relevant.
